Gold and platinum are soaring because a power shortage in South Africa has shut the country’s mines; the resulting supply deficit for platinum in 2008 is projected to hit about 200,000 pounds. The big winner may be palladium, a replacement for platinum, says MSN Money’s Jim Jubak.
